Lee Cattermole targets top six for Sunderland

Lee Cattermole is targeting a European place for his Sunderland outfit after their strong start to the season.

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce and players have not mentioned the possibility of a place in Europe at the end of the season, but Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has tipped Sunderland to qualify and now Cattermole has dared mention it.

The top six are guaranteed a place in Europe but with Sunderland sat in seventh, Cattermole has dared to dream.

He told the Journal:"This period for the club is a big period.

"You can see the club's going places and we all need to keep pulling together and working hard. No one's said it yet, but I think we all believe we can go somewhere.

"Last week we were seventh but all on the same points, this week we're three points clear, so it's good. But we're going into a good run of games and the gaffer's pulled us up in training and said we need to try and get 10, 12 points to get us in the top six.

"I was talking to a mate before I went out (against West Ham) and he asked how I thought we were going to go. I said, 'We've got to win.' He said, 'What do you mean?' I said if you want to climb up the table, stay in the top half and fight for Europe you've got to win games like this at home."

Sunderland are hoping to continue their good run of form against a struggling Fulham outfit on Saturday.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email
